It is made of your favorite vegetables, rice and meat if you want to. So, it can be a vegetarian recipe. The best one.

This recipe is very popular in Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Bosnia.

It is very rich dinner/lunch recipe.

The name is …

DJUVEC!

So, let’s do it.

Shopping Time

Your shopping list will include the following

  • tomatoes, onions, peppers (red or green)
  • carrots
  • uncooked rice
  • chicken breast
  • oil, salt, pepper
  • oregano

Equipment

Casserole dish or pan

ACTION TIME – MAKING DJUVEC

Ingredients

3 TBSP oil

2 large onions, sliced

3 large carrots

1 1/2 cups uncooked and washed rice

2 peppers (red or green)-

4 1/2 cups water

1 lbs chicken breast

1 TBSP salt

3 lbs tomatoes (or as much as you want to)

1 tsp black peppers

1 tsp oregano

Instructions

Slice tomatoes. Set aside.

Mixed chopped onions, peppers, carrots and rice in a large bowl.

Add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Cube chicken breast into a medium pieces. (or any size you like)

The next step is to boil 4 1/2 cups of water with salt and pepper.

Now, you have everything ready:

  • sliced tomato
  • mixed vegetables/rice
  • cubed chicken
  • boiled water

Take a casserole dish and layer the ingredients in this order:

-pour 3 TBSP oil into bottom

-place half of sliced tomatoes

half of the veggies/rice mixture

chicken

Remaining veggies

sliced tomatoes

Pour the boiling water over the casserole.

Cover and bake at 450 for about 90 minutes . (hour and half)

Be sure that rice is thoroughly cooked.

It can be re-heated.

This is so easy and mess free project and you will get beautifully colored Easter eggs.

What do you need for this project? (check your shopping list below)

Shopping List

-dry rice ( I bought 2 lbs)

-food coloring ( I used Wilson food gel coloring)

-plastic bags (Ziploc from the dollar store)

-boiled eggs

-plastic gloves

Ingredients

-eggs (use as many as you want to)

-1/2 cup rice /per bag

Instructions

Boil the eggs.

Cool them for a few minutes.

IMPORTANT! You want eggs to be warmer because the color will stick better.

While the eggs are cooling, lets prepare colored rice.

Use one plastic bag per color of your choice. (I started with red)

Pour 1/2 cup of rice in bag #1

Squeeze a liberal amount of red food coloring into it.

Shake the rice so it is is coated. Make as many bags as you want to.

Add your egg, close the bag and shake the egg.

Imagine you are a very gently bartender. Shake it for 30 to 45 seconds.

Take the egg out and you will have the most beautiful pattern from the dyed rice.

Now, find the bag number 2 and repeat the steps above.

Use as many bags as you wanted.

Rice will dry very quickly so keep adding more color into the bag.
